Mysterious Kidney Disease Affecting Young, Healthy Workers Emerges in Texas
A mysterious form of kidney disease, known as chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) or Mesoamerican nephropathy, appears to be surfacing in Texas. This condition primarily affects young to middle-aged adults, often men, working in agriculture and outdoor labor in hot climates. Physicians at Houston safety-net hospitals have treated otherwise healthy men in their 20s and 30s presenting with kidney failure, some exhibiting 'Coca-Cola-colored urine,' without the typical risk factors like high blood pressure or diabetes. Dr. Gokul Paidi, a family medicine physician, notes that these Texas cases closely mirror those initially observed in Central America.
