San Diego Woman Undergoes Amputations Following Complications from Emergency Heart Surgery
Leslie Caoili, a 41-year-old San Diego woman and competitive strength athlete, has undergone amputations of her arms and legs due to complications following emergency heart surgery. Caoili went for a routine heart checkup in May, where doctors discovered a life-threatening Type A aortic dissection, a severe tear in the main artery from her heart. She required immediate cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and extensive aortic reconstruction to save her life. Although the initial surgery was successful, Caoili subsequently lost blood flow to her hands and feet in the weeks following the procedure. Despite efforts to improve circulation, doctors were ultimately forced to amputate her hands at the mid-forearm and both legs. After several months in the hospital, Caoili is preparing to be discharged, and her family is seeking assistance to make their home accessible for her new needs.
