New Orleans Recycles Christmas Trees to Restore Coastal Wetlands
New Orleans has implemented an innovative program to recycle discarded Christmas trees by airlifting them into coastal wetlands to combat land loss. This initiative, which has been running for nearly 30 years, involves collecting used Christmas trees, bundling them, and dropping them into marshes via helicopters. The trees help trap mud and reduce water movement, providing a conducive environment for marsh plants to grow. This program has successfully restored marshland equivalent to nearly 200 football fields, contributing to the protection of Louisiana's rapidly disappearing coastline. The effort is a collaboration between the City of New Orleans, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Louisiana Army National Guard.
