Providence City Council Approves Funding for Union Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements
The Providence City Council has approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement to fund the Union Avenue Pedestrian Improvements Project. This decision was made during a recent council meeting. Councilman Oscar Vargas, who sponsored the item, highlighted that the project was initiated following the death of a pedestrian struck by a school bus at a ramp on Union Avenue approximately a year prior. The city has been working to enhance the safety of this intersection and has secured state transportation funding for the necessary work. The improvements will address three corners that span Councilman Vargas's ward, Council President Rachel Miller's ward, and Councilor James Taylor's ward. Vargas emphasized the urgency of the council's action to ensure the release of approximately half a million dollars in state funds, warning that losing this funding would negatively impact the three affected neighborhoods. The resolution passed by a voice vote.
