Former Senator Joe Manchin Launches Independent Leadership Council to Support Non-Partisan Candidates
Former Senator Joe Manchin, who transitioned from a Democrat to an independent during his final year in the Senate, is re-engaging in the political arena by establishing the Independent Leadership Council. This nonpartisan group aims to recruit and financially support independent candidates running for Congress in upcoming midterm elections. Manchin's initiative stems from his belief that a less partisan Congress, populated by 'free agents' not beholden to either major political party, is essential for effective governance. He cites his own experience as an independent senator, where he claims his single vote made a significant difference in legislative achievements during the 117th Congress by fostering bipartisan cooperation. The Council, co-founded with his daughter Heather, plans to review potential candidates and provide financial backing to amplify their campaigns, with decisions expected by mid-September.
