U.S. Citizen's Family Struggles to Maintain Business After Deportation Amidst 'Operation Midway Blitz'
The family of Asif Amin Cheema, a 64-year-old U.S. resident and owner of Best Sub #2 in Humboldt Park, is struggling to keep his sandwich shop operational after his deportation to Pakistan. Cheema was detained by federal immigration agents last September during 'Operation Midway Blitz' due to a missed court date, which his family claims their former immigration lawyer failed to inform them about. Despite having no criminal record, he was arrested and spent nearly three months in detention before being deported on New Year’s Day. His youngest son, 19-year-old Nooran Amin, has taken over the daily operations of the restaurant, balancing it with his architecture studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. The family views the restaurant as a vital link to their father and his legacy in the U.S., resisting his initial suggestion to sell it.
