Jacksonville Transportation Authority Considers Reinstating Tolls Amidst $39 Million Budget Shortfall
The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is exploring the possibility of reinstating tolls on local roads and bridges, a move that could affect thousands of drivers. This discussion arises as JTA faces a significant financial crisis, including an estimated $39 million budget shortfall. JTA Interim CEO Cleveland Ferguson III raised the idea during a meeting with Jacksonville City Council members, noting that the agency retains the legal authority to collect tolls. The proposal is not yet an approved plan but has initiated a public discussion about potential revenue sources. Jacksonville previously eliminated bridge tolls in 1989 after voters approved a half-cent sales tax. The current financial challenges have already led to workforce reductions, affecting nearly 200 employees, and service changes, including reduced routes and longer waiting times for public transportation riders.
