IMF Conditions Aid to Mozambique on Fiscal and External Reforms Amid Economic Pressure
Mozambique's economy is currently facing significant pressure, prompting an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to visit the country for discussions on potential reforms. These discussions are aimed at paving the way for a fund-supported program. The IMF has indicated that Mozambique is grappling with substantial fiscal and external challenges, necessitating further reforms. This economic strain is occurring against a backdrop of political instability, including a disputed presidential election in 2024 that led to protests and political violence, and an ongoing Islamist insurgency in the northern part of the country. The European Union (EU) has also been involved in Mozambique, providing development and humanitarian assistance, and engaging in security operations, with a recent allocation of €24.5 million for humanitarian aid.
