Milwaukee's Department of Public Works Proposes Roundabouts for Holton Street to Enhance Safety
The City of Milwaukee's Department of Public Works (DPW) is considering a significant change to Holton Street, proposing the installation of roundabouts at three intersections between Keefe and Burleigh. These intersections, currently controlled by traffic lights at Keefe, Concordia, and Burleigh, would be converted to roundabouts. This initiative stems from a concerning safety record on this stretch of road, which has seen over 30 accidents, including two fatalities, since 2020, according to Milwaukee County crash data. The area is also designated as part of Milwaukee's high injury network for pedestrians, highlighting the urgent need for safety improvements. David Tapia from DPW stated that these changes aim to alert drivers to altered conditions, thereby encouraging lower speeds and reducing conflict points common in traditional traffic light intersections, particularly head-on and left-turn collisions.
