Pennsylvania Pediatricians 'Prescribe' Books to Boost Child Literacy
In Pennsylvania, a new initiative led by pediatricians aims to improve child literacy by 'prescribing' books during routine check-ups. This program, part of the national Reach Out and Read model, encourages families to read together, thereby supporting literacy rates and school readiness. Dr. Trude Haecker, medical director of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's local book program, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, especially as reading levels have stagnated or declined in recent years. The program has expanded with a Pennsylvania affiliate, involving over 1,000 pediatricians statewide, with hopes to increase participation. The initiative is seen as a personal mission for Haecker, who aims for every child to receive a book at each check-up.
