Mesa Mother Charged with Child Abuse After Toddler Tests Positive for Drugs and is Found in Hot Garage
Amy Nicole Shellhammer, a Mesa mother, faces child abuse charges after her 2-year-old son was allegedly left alone in a sweltering garage and later tested positive for meth, fentanyl, and THC. On July 29, a neighbor called 911 after Shellhammer texted her, stating the child was in the garage and she was ill. The neighbor expressed concern due to the garage's lack of air conditioning and extreme heat. Upon finding the toddler asleep, it took the neighbor 20 to 30 minutes to wake him. The high temperature in Mesa that day was 109 degrees Fahrenheit. The Arizona Department of Child Safety took custody of the child on August 1. During a medical visit, the presence of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and THC was detected in the boy's system.
