Richmond Expands Red Light Camera Program to Enhance Traffic Safety
Richmond, Virginia, is expanding its red light camera program as part of its Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. The latest expansion involves the activation of red light cameras at the intersection of Mechanicsville Turnpike and Fairfield Way, marking the tenth such location in the city's pilot program. This follows the initial deployment of cameras near Virginia Commonwealth University last September. The city has identified 10 camera locations, five north and five south of the river, which collectively account for 60% of the city's deadly or serious crashes. A 30-day warning period for the cameras at Midlothian Turnpike and German School Road, during which drivers received warning notices instead of $50 citations, is concluding this week.
