Columbia, Missouri Implements New Public Safety Sales Tax, Raising Rates to Nearly 10% in Some Districts
Columbia, Missouri, has enacted a new public safety sales tax, leading to an increase in the combined sales tax rate across the city and Boone County. The base combined rate now stands at 8.97% in most of Boone County, while special taxing districts, such as Columbia Mall, Discovery Parkway, and the Shoppes at Stadium, are seeing rates approach nearly 10%. Downtown Columbia and the Business Loop Community Improvement Districts now have a combined rate of 9.47%. This change makes Columbia one of the higher-rate cities in Missouri outside of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The revenue generated from this new tax is earmarked for specific public safety initiatives. The Columbia Fire Department plans to hire 42 additional firefighters, construct two new fire stations, and renovate three existing ones.
