Residents of Kalaupapa, Hawaii, including patients and staff, have been temporarily relocated to a care home on Oʻahu following the failure of both the primary and secondary drinking water systems. According to Nancy Holman, superintendent of Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the primary system experienced issues, and while efforts were underway to address it, the secondary system also failed. This dual failure led the state Department of Health to initiate the temporary relocation. Water restrictions were initially implemented, but the inability to sustain water supply for residential houses necessitated the evacuation. Repairs are currently in progress, with diagnostic and repair cycles ongoing for various components of the water system. This marks the first time both systems have failed simultaneously, despite regular maintenance, and the first time residents have had to leave the peninsula for an extended period due to such an issue.
