Long Beach Proposes Library Staff and Hours Reductions Amid Rising Demand
The city of Long Beach is considering significant cuts to its library services as part of a broader effort to address a projected $58 million budget deficit. The proposed plan includes reducing library hours and eliminating 14 positions, including library clerks, assistants, and a mental health specialist. These cuts are expected to save the department over $1.4 million. Despite these proposed reductions, library usage has been increasing, with more than 2,800 patrons visiting daily across the city's 12 branches, marking an 8% rise since last year. The number of programs offered has also increased by 50% in the past year. Librarians and community members are concerned about the impact of these cuts, particularly the loss of the mental health associate who plays a crucial role in supporting teens.
