Flock License Plate Cameras in Texas Face Growing Anti-Surveillance Backlash
In Texas, the use of Flock Safety's license plate reader cameras is expanding rapidly, sparking a significant backlash over privacy concerns. These cameras, which utilize artificial intelligence to scan vehicles and upload data to a large surveillance database, are being used by law enforcement agencies across the state without the need for warrants. This has led to incidents where innocent individuals have been mistakenly flagged, resulting in false accusations and arrests. U.S. Representative Keith Self has proposed legislation to require federal agencies to obtain warrants before accessing such data. Despite the controversy, many local law enforcement agencies continue to adopt the technology, citing its effectiveness in crime prevention.
