Texas State University Launches Floating Wetlands Project in Lake Kyle to Enhance Water Quality
Texas State University, led by researcher Sangchul Hwang, Ph.D., P.E., is initiating a three-year project to deploy floating wetlands in Lake Kyle. This initiative, funded by a $457,000 grant from the City of Kyle, aims to improve the lake's water quality and protect the Plum Creek Watershed. The project will assess the effectiveness of this nature-based system in filtering pollutants. Hwang, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, is leading a team from his HEDGE Research Group, comprising doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students. The team is currently monitoring Lake Kyle to establish baseline water quality conditions and identify potential pollution sources. They have also tested a smaller-scale floating wetland in a lab setting and are now testing a larger version under conditions that simulate Lake Kyle. The full-scale floating wetlands are expected to be launched in spring 2027, followed by continuous monitoring to evaluate their performance. The research will also screen for contam...
