SC State University Eliminates Nine Degree Programs Following Productivity Report
South Carolina State University (SC State) has voted to eliminate nine degree programs from its catalog, a decision made by its governing board last week. This action follows a report from the SC Commission on Higher Education, which indicated that just over a third of SC State's degree programs meet state standards for enrollment and graduation, making it the least compliant among South Carolina's public four-year institutions. Four of the axed programs have not enrolled any students in the past decade. The university's President, Alexander Conyers, and Interim Provost, Louis Whitesides, stated that these changes are necessary to align with the evolving workforce needs of South Carolina and to strategically invest resources. The decision impacts 111 students across five programs, who will be allowed to complete their degrees, while no new students will be admitted to these programs. Additionally, over 200 classes with fewer than 10 students enrolled this fall have been canceled, with many consolidated.
