Carter Middle School Evacuates Students During Bomb Threat, Leading to 21 Heat-Related Hospitalizations in Tennessee
Twenty-one students from Carter Middle School in Knox County, Tennessee, were hospitalized with heat-related illnesses after being evacuated to a football field due to a bomb threat on September 4. The evacuation occurred during a National Weather Service (NWS) Heat Advisory, which warned of heat index values reaching 41.1°C (106°F). The Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) received notification of a potential threat at approximately 9:56 AM EDT after a threatening message was found on a bathroom wall. School administrators moved students to the football field around 10:25 AM EDT while KCSO K-9 teams searched the building. Students were outside for an estimated 50-55 minutes. Upon returning to the school at approximately 11:27 AM EDT, several students began exhibiting symptoms of heat-related illness. Emergency medical personnel were called to evaluate and treat them.
