California Buyer Loses $36,000 in AI-Generated 4Runner Facebook Marketplace Scam
A California buyer, Wil Matthews, lost over $36,000 in a sophisticated scam on Facebook Marketplace involving an AI-generated listing for a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. Matthews agreed to purchase the vehicle, which was advertised by what appeared to be a legitimate Texas dealership. The listing included convincing photos, paperwork, and a valid VIN, leading his lender to approve the $36,240 purchase. The scammers, who slightly altered the name of a real dealership (Route 519 Motor Company), provided realistic-looking sales stickers, order forms, and dealer licensing paperwork. After payment, Matthews received a photo of the 4Runner on a transport truck and access to a fake GPS tracking page.
