Winneconne School Board President Kati Calewarts Defends Against Recall Petition Allegations
Winneconne Community School District Board of Education President Kati Calewarts is publicly addressing a recall petition filed against her, labeling the claims as false and driven by 'hatefulness' and 'political activists.' The petition, which has garnered over 1,000 signatures, alleges that Calewarts illegally contracted work with the law firm von Brisen and Roper. Calewarts asserts that her decision to engage the firm was guided by legal counsel and that no formal contract exists between the district and the firm. She maintains that her actions were legal and within her authority, noting that the board ultimately voted 4-2 to work with von Brisen and Roper. This development follows recent staffing changes within the district, including the placement of District Administrator Margaret Larson on paid leave and the termination of school nurse Kimberley Zeller. Calewarts has declined to provide details on these personnel decisions, citing that they were made in closed session.
