Inter-American Development Bank Increases Security Funding to $4 Billion for Latin America
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has announced a significant increase in its funding to enhance security and justice across Latin America and the Caribbean. The funding has been raised from $2.5 billion to $4 billion, as revealed during the Regional Security and Justice Summit in Brazil. This decision comes in response to the growing demand from member countries for stronger support in combating organized crime and improving public safety. The IDB's current security project pipeline has reached $1.42 billion, which is nearly 60% of the financing target set for the 2026-2028 period. The IDB Group President, Ilan Goldfajn, emphasized that organized crime is a major obstacle to development in the region, affecting investment, public institutions, and economic growth. The Alliance for Security, Justice, and Development, launched in Ecuador in 2024, has shown that regional cooperation and large-scale investment can yield practical results.
