UN and ICRC Warn Against 'Killer Robots,' Urge Treaty to Regulate Autonomous Weapons
The United Nations (UN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have issued a stark warning regarding the imminent threat of 'killer robots' and are pushing for a new international treaty to regulate lethal autonomous weapons. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric stated that humanity is dangerously close to crossing a 'moral red line' where machines autonomously target human beings. While autonomous weapons capable of selecting and engaging targets without human involvement have existed, such as on warships for defense, new generation AI-assisted weapons with increasing autonomy are emerging in conflicts in Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine.
