South African Millionaire Offers Financial Dividends to Principe Islanders for Nature Protection
On the island of Principe, a South African tech entrepreneur, Mark Shuttleworth, is providing financial dividends to local inhabitants to encourage the preservation of the island's natural environment. Shuttleworth, who operates a luxury ecotourism business on the island, initiated this scheme through his charitable organization, the Faya Foundation. Adults on Principe can receive up to 6,250 dobras ($290) per quarter, equivalent to about $3.20 a day, in exchange for agreeing in writing not to engage in environmentally damaging activities such as sand extraction or unregulated logging. This initiative aims to protect the mountainous volcanic island, its pristine beaches, and tropical forest, which are home to numerous endemic species and are crucial for Shuttleworth's ecotourism model. The payments represent a significant bonus in a country where a substantial portion of the population lives on less than $3.60 a day.
