Cold Start for Boston Marathon as Military Marchers Begin
On Monday, the 130th Boston Marathon commenced with a group of Massachusetts National Guard members crossing the start line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The race began at 6 a.m. under notably cold conditions, with temperatures slightly above freezing and frost visible on the grass. Race Director Dave McGillivray noted that this was the coldest start he could recall in his nearly 40 years of involvement with the marathon. Despite the chill, participants like Staff Sgt. Mackenzie Smith and Spec. Benjamin De Boer expressed enthusiasm for their first marathon experience. The cold weather added complexity to the event, as runners arrived with extra clothing layers that would be discarded at the start line. As the day progresses, conditions are expected to improve, making it ideal for running.
