Canada-U.S. Relations: Shift Focus from Capitol Hill to State Capitals
Canada is being advised to shift its diplomatic focus from Washington, D.C., to state capitals across the U.S. to strengthen bilateral relations. This strategy aims to build influence at the state level, where economic interests often align more closely with Canadian priorities. The recent imposition of Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods has highlighted the limitations of a Washington-centric approach. By engaging with state governments and local stakeholders, Canada can foster partnerships that support mutual economic interests and provide a buffer against federal policy shifts. This approach is exemplified by the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Summit, which brought together regional leaders to discuss shared challenges and opportunities.
