Daily Avocado Consumption Linked to Modest Reduction in LDL Cholesterol, New Research Suggests
A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology indicates that consuming one avocado daily is associated with a modest reduction in LDL, or 'bad,' cholesterol. The six-month Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial involved 786 adults over 25 with abdominal obesity. Participants were divided into two groups: one maintained their usual diet and activity, while the other added one avocado per day without other lifestyle changes. Researchers observed a 49-nanomole-per-liter decrease in LDL cholesterol in the daily avocado group, which could translate to approximately a 4% lower risk of heart disease. Cardiologists, including Kirk MacNaught, MD, of Tufts Medicine Lowell General Hospital, explain that avocados contain monounsaturated fats, phytosterols, and fiber, all of which contribute to lowering LDL cholesterol and potentially raising HDL, or 'good,' cholesterol. The study was funded by the Avocado Nutrition Center, though the organization was not involved in the study's design, analysis, or interpret...
