Waffle House Index Tracks Hurricane Damage in the U.S.
The Waffle House Index, an informal disaster assessment tool, is being used to gauge hurricane damage across the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States. This system, developed in 2004 by Craig Fugate, uses the operational status of Waffle House restaurants to assess infrastructure damage. The index employs a color-coded system: green indicates full operation, yellow signals limited service due to partial outages, and red means the location is closed due to severe damage. With over 1,900 locations concentrated in hurricane-prone areas, Waffle House serves as a real-time indicator of disaster severity. FEMA monitors these statuses alongside traditional data to identify areas of significant destruction. The chain has also enhanced its disaster resilience since Hurricane Katrina, deploying portable generators, mobile command units, and pre-staged recovery teams to maintain operations during storms.
