Iran-Linked Cyber Threats Target 2026 World Cup Amid Rising Tensions
The upcoming 2026 World Cup is anticipated to be a major target for cyberattacks and online fraud, according to cybersecurity expert Ofir Zilbiger. The event, which is expected to draw global attention, is likely to see a significant increase in cyber threats, particularly due to geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. Zilbiger, who is the head of cybersecurity for EMEA at BDO, highlighted that major sporting events typically experience a 30% to 40% rise in fraud attempts. However, the World Cup could face even more severe threats. Iranian-linked hackers are expected to focus on disrupting national infrastructure, including airports and transportation systems, through methods such as ransomware and DDoS attacks. Additionally, the public is at risk from scams involving fake ticket sales and fraudulent travel packages, with many of these threats leveraging artificial intelligence to mimic legitimate services.
