Sudanese Medical Group Accuses Rebel Faction of Killing 27 Civilians, Including Children, in South Kordofan
A local medical group, the Sudan Doctors Network, has accused the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-N) of killing 27 people, including four children, in recent ethnic clashes in South Kordofan, Sudan. The killings occurred in Qardud and Abu Hamama, areas primarily inhabited by the Otoro tribe. The Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors casualty numbers in the war-torn country, stated that targeting unarmed civilians, including women and children, on ethnic grounds constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law. This incident follows intense fighting earlier this year between SPLM-N forces and the Otoro tribe, a minority group in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan. The ethnic standoff, initially sparked by land disputes, further complicates Sudan's ongoing civil war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The attacks have caused a significant displacement of people towards Abu Hitan and Kadugli.
