UK Cancels Military Exercise in Kenya Amid Legal Dispute
The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence has cancelled a planned military training exercise in Kenya, originally scheduled for September 2026. The decision comes amid unresolved disagreements over legal jurisdiction, accountability mechanisms, and the rules governing the presence of British forces in Kenya. The UK-Kenya Defence Cooperation Agreement, which outlines the legal framework for military cooperation, is at the center of the dispute. This agreement covers training arrangements, investigations, and jurisdiction over visiting forces. The British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) has been a longstanding arrangement allowing joint exercises between British and Kenyan forces. However, concerns have been raised by Kenyan lawmakers regarding the accountability of British troops accused of offenses in Kenya. Despite the cancellation, both countries have expressed a desire to maintain security ties.
