U.S. and Mexico Strengthen 1944 Water Treaty to Secure Water for Texas Agriculture
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of State have announced a new commitment with Mexico to enhance the implementation of the 1944 Water Treaty. This agreement aims to provide greater water delivery certainty to farmers, ranchers, and producers in South Texas who depend on the Rio Grande. The announcement follows a recent call between President Trump and President Sheinbaum, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to resolving water management challenges. Under the agreement, Mexico will deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet of water annually to the U.S. over a five-year cycle, addressing previous water deficits and ensuring stability for agricultural producers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
