Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Signs Bill to Feature Lake Superior Agate on State License Plates
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed HF3699/Chapter 57, known as the 'agate bill,' into law, which will feature the Lake Superior agate on state license plates. The initiative originated from Lars Leafblad '99, a rock enthusiast, who discussed the idea with his children. Leafblad subsequently collaborated with state legislators to champion the bill, aiming to celebrate Minnesota's North Shore and its official state gemstone. Following its passage in both the House and Senate, the bill was enacted in May. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now organizing a design contest for the new license plate, with submissions accepted until October 31, 2026. The winning design is scheduled to be announced in December.
