Bakersfield Police Respond to Bomb Threat as Man Barricades Inside Bank
In Bakersfield, California, a man has barricaded himself inside a bank with a bomb strapped to his body, according to local reports. The incident began when police responded to a bomb threat at a Chase bank in downtown Bakersfield around 1 PM. Sgt. Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department confirmed the situation, noting that the man is inside with an unknown number of people. Although initially hesitant to label the situation as a hostage crisis, Celedon later acknowledged it as such. One hostage was released in the afternoon, and another in the evening, but the total number of hostages remains unclear. The city has issued evacuation orders for the area, and several city buildings, including City Hall and the police headquarters, are on lockdown. Emergency responders, including about a dozen police cars and a tactical vehicle, are on the scene. The police have advised the public to avoid the downtown area due to road closures.
