Utah Expands AI Sandbox for Healthcare, Approving AI-Powered Prescriptions and Women's Health Pilots
Utah regulators have announced a significant expansion of their 'AI sandbox' program, which allows the state's Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) to waive regulations for companies testing AI products under state supervision. As part of this expansion, a startup named Nolla Health will launch an AI-powered service in Utah. This service will assess patients for mild-to-moderate acne treatment using structured intake questionnaires and by analyzing skin photos. The AI will then determine if a low-risk drug from a pre-approved list is appropriate. Initially, a licensed clinician will review and sign off on all AI-generated prescriptions, but Nolla Health may eventually be permitted to prescribe drugs without prior human review. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Utah to foster innovation in AI within the healthcare sector, including additional pilots for women's health.
