President Trump Faces Pressure Over Chinese AI Models Amidst National Security Concerns
President Trump is under increasing pressure to address the success of Chinese AI models, which are reportedly preferred by many companies over more expensive U.S. versions from Anthropic and OpenAI. The issue gained attention with the release of the Kimi K3 model by Moonshot, which U.S. officials claim was developed by illicitly copying Anthropic's technology through a process called distillation. This practice, while common in the industry, is said to be used at scale by Chinese firms to replicate proprietary American systems. The U.S. Commerce Department is investigating Chinese companies like Moonshot for potentially circumventing export restrictions on AI chips. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has threatened sanctions against China, and there is consideration of banning foreign-made open-source models. However, this has sparked opposition from Silicon Valley, which argues that such measures would stifle competition and innovation.
