Senator Chris Van Hollen Criticizes ICE Detention of Johns Hopkins Researcher
Senator Chris Van Hollen has publicly criticized the detention of Fatima Ameaka, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ameaka, who entered the U.S. legally on a Fulbright scholarship, was detained at the Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport for allegedly overstaying her visa. Despite having a pending asylum application and a temporary protected status due to the conflict in Cameroon, she was held in ICE facilities across Virginia, Louisiana, and Texas before being released. Van Hollen argues that her detention does not enhance U.S. security and calls for public opposition to such actions. The Department of Homeland Security claims the detention is part of efforts to ensure that individuals illegally in the U.S. cannot fly unless self-deporting.
