South Carolina Man Charged with Forgery and Insurance Fraud in Staged Accident Scheme
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Matthew Jo Von Coaxum, 45, with forgery and insurance fraud related to a fraudulent vehicle accident claim. Coaxum allegedly participated as a 'jump-in' passenger in a false insurance claim filed with Progressive Insurance for an accident in Richland County. He is accused of fabricating a lost wage form, claiming he missed 42 days of work at AWP Safety Services, resulting in a claimed loss of $12,012. Investigations by Progressive and SLED revealed Coaxum was not employed at the company and was not present during the accident. Coaxum received $2,000 from the claim. He faces charges of Forgery and Presenting a False Claim for Insurance Payment, both valued at $10,000 or more. The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
