President Trump Considers Cutting Ties with UNHCR Amid Leadership Dispute
The Trump administration is contemplating severing ties with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) following a leadership dispute. The disagreement arose from the appointment of Tressa Rae Finerty, a U.S. career diplomat, as the deputy high commissioner, a decision made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih. This appointment was contrary to the U.S. preference for Simon Hankinson, a former foreign service officer. The U.S., historically the largest donor to UNHCR, has been considering disengagement from the agency, which could significantly impact its operations. Despite expectations of a decision last week, no official announcement has been made, suggesting that diplomatic efforts may have delayed or prevented the move.
