Amtrak and Penn Transformation Partners Unveil $8 Billion Plan for Penn Station Revamp
Amtrak, in collaboration with Penn Transformation Partners, has unveiled a comprehensive $8 billion plan to transform New York City's Penn Station. The proposed design aims to restore the grandeur of the original Beaux Arts terminal, demolished in 1963, by incorporating Roman-style columns and a spacious, sunlit concourse. The redesign, inspired by iconic structures like Grand Central Terminal and federal buildings in Washington, D.C., seeks to enhance the commuter experience for the over 600,000 daily users. The project, which will maintain the station's operation throughout its phased construction, is expected to begin by the end of 2027 and span approximately six years. Despite previous plans to relocate Madison Square Garden, the arena will remain in place, with a theater above the tracks being demolished to accommodate the new design.
