Tropical Storm Lala drenches Hawaii with heavy rain and strong winds
Tropical Storm Lala, which had briefly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph), weakened back to tropical storm status on Sunday morning. Despite not making landfall, the storm caused widespread destruction across Hawaii's Big Island and other parts of the state. Heavy rainfall, reaching nearly one meter (39 inches) in some areas, triggered flash floods and mudslides, while hurricane-force gusts battered the islands. Honolulu experienced significant impacts, including downed trees, power outages, and flooding. As of 11 a.m. local time, Lala was located 220 kilometers (137 miles) west of Honolulu, moving west-northwest at 28 km/h (17 mph) with sustained winds of 100 km/h (62 mph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that Lala could regain hurricane strength by Tuesday or Wednesday as it moves away from Hawaii.
