U.S. Datacentre Protests Highlight Growing Opposition to Big Tech Influence
Across the United States, there is increasing opposition to the construction of datacentres for artificial intelligence, driven by concerns over environmental impacts and the influence of big tech companies. This movement has united diverse political groups, including blue-collar Trump supporters and liberal activists, in a shared cause against unregulated datacentre expansion. The White House, under President Trump, has prioritized the rapid development of these facilities as part of its AI action plan, supported by major industry players like Amazon and Microsoft. However, the construction boom has led to higher electricity bills and pressure on local water systems, causing discontent among voters. Some states have blocked or suspended projects worth an estimated $156 billion due to these concerns.
