Mexican National Dies in Florida ICE Encounter, Sparking Criticism of Enforcement Tactics
Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran, a 28-year-old Mexican national, died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in St. Augustine, Florida. This incident marks the third ICE-related fatality in under a week, raising concerns about the safety of immigration enforcement operations. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the incident occurred during an operation near St. Johns, Florida, and is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations. The victim was among four individuals who fled from ICE agents after stopping at a gas station. The driver of the truck attempted to render aid, but Coronilla Duran died at the scene. The incident has drawn criticism from immigrant-rights advocates and Democratic officials, who argue that the administration's enforcement tactics have increased the risk of dangerous confrontations.
