Sniffer Dogs Exhibit Increased False Alarms When Hungry, Study Finds
A recent study conducted by researchers in Australia and New Zealand has revealed that scent-detection dogs are more prone to making mistakes when they are hungry. The study, published in 'Learning and Motivation,' observed six scent-detection dogs and found that they raised more false alarms before breakfast compared to after they had eaten. Specifically, hungry dogs were less effective at ignoring 'non-target' scents, indicating a bias towards identifying non-target smells as targets when working for treats. Tim Edwards of the University of Waikato explained that this behavior is likely similar to human tendencies, where high motivation to find something can lead to misidentification of similar objects. The research suggests that the dogs' hunger increased their motivation for rewards, leading them to be less discriminating in their scent detection. This discovery has implications for how and when working dogs are fed before being deployed for duties.
