Tropical System in Gulf May Become First 2026 Hurricane
A tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico is showing signs of development, with the National Hurricane Center assigning it a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression by the end of the week (source: Boston Globe). This system, which could be named Isaias, is forming in an unusually warm Gulf, where sea surface temperatures have been setting daily records since late August. Despite these favorable conditions for storm intensification, strong wind shear associated with a 'super' El Niño has suppressed hurricane activity across the Atlantic this season. The Atlantic basin has yet to record a hurricane in 2026, making this one of the quietest seasons on record. The system is expected to drift eastward before turning north, potentially impacting the Gulf Coast later this week.
