Supreme Court Ruling on Birthright Citizenship Spurs Legislative Efforts by President Trump
President Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship through executive action has reached a legal dead end after the Supreme Court ruled against his executive order. The court's decision in Trump v. Barbara affirmed that children born in the U.S. to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present are citizens at birth under the 14th Amendment. Despite the setback, Trump and his allies are exploring legislative avenues to restrict birthright citizenship. Republican lawmakers, including Representative John McGuire of Virginia, have introduced bills to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act. The administration is also focusing on birth tourism as a potential target for reform.
