Hantavirus Strain Found in Cruise Ship Passengers Raises Concerns for Human Transmission
A cruise ship, the MV Hondius, is currently marooned off the coast of Cape Verde due to an outbreak of hantavirus, specifically the Andes strain, which is capable of human-to-human transmission. The ship, which began its journey in Argentina, has seen three deaths and several illnesses among its passengers. Health authorities in South Africa and Switzerland have confirmed cases of the virus, with one Swiss man currently receiving treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been involved in managing the situation, and the ship is expected to head to Spain's Canary Islands for further assistance. The virus typically spreads through contact with infected rodent droppings, but the Andes strain can spread between people through close contact.
