Mexican Smuggler Pleads Guilty in US-Mexico Border Tunnel Operation
Luis Carlos Davalos-Lopez, a Mexican smuggler, has pleaded guilty to charges related to an operation that brought illegal migrants into the U.S. through a tunnel under the US-Mexico border. Prosecutors stated that Davalos-Lopez was a key figure in a criminal enterprise that charged migrants thousands of dollars for passage. The smuggling method involved taking migrants underground to exit points, with some having to climb through a drain into a truck via a trap door, as reported by CBS News. U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons for the Western District of Texas highlighted that this criminal organization has had a significant negative impact on both sides of the border, not only by smuggling drugs and illegal aliens but also by trafficking firearms into Mexico, which were then used to further facilitate their illicit activities. Davalos-Lopez faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the conspiracy charge.
