Amnesty International Accuses Italy of Authoritarian Tactics in Albania Asylum Deal
Amnesty International has issued a report criticizing Italy's controversial deal with Albania, which aims to fast-track deportations of asylum seekers from countries deemed 'safe.' The human rights organization alleges that Italy is employing 'authoritarian practices to evade accountability' by using numerous decrees to bypass judicial oversight. The report also highlights alleged abuses at Italy's migration facilities in Albania, including incidents of attempted hangings and self-harm between April and May of last year. Despite these concerns, the European Commission is reportedly encouraging member states to further implement 'innovative solutions' to prevent asylum claims within Europe, including expanding the 'safe country concept.' This concept allows for the expedited processing of asylum claims from a list of designated 'safe countries of origin,' which includes several non-EU nations.
