Record High in Conflict-Driven Internal Displacements in 2025 Highlights Global Protection Failures
In 2025, the number of internal displacements caused by conflict reached a record high of 32.3 million, surpassing those caused by natural disasters for the first time since data collection began in 2008. This significant increase, reported by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), represents a 60% rise from the previous year. Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, described the figures as indicative of a 'global collapse' in civilian protection. The report highlights that many displaced individuals face repeated displacements, with systems meant to protect them being dismantled. The majority of these displacements occurred in countries like Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Syria, where conflict and violence are prevalent.
